Planning Your Hike from Inez Spring

The Eastland area sits at the edge of the Cross Timbers region, where rolling prairie meets post-oak savanna. That mix of terrain means the trails around here range from flat riverside walks to rocky ridgeline routes with real elevation change.

Distances and Difficulty at a Glance

Old Zoo Nature Trail, Cisco: roughly 1.5-mile loop, flat terrain, suitable for all ages. The path follows old zoo enclosure foundations from the 1920s, making it part nature walk, part history lesson.

Ringling Lake Trail, Eastland: about a 1-mile out-and-back along the lakeshore. Mostly level with a packed-dirt surface. Good for birding - great blue herons and kingfishers are regulars here.

Possum Kingdom State Park: multiple routes ranging from 1 mile to over 7 miles. The Hell's Gate Overlook trail is a moderate 3-mile round trip with about 300 feet of elevation gain. The shoreline trails are easier but can be slippery near the water.

Palo Pinto Mountains State Park: trails up to 5 miles with moderate elevation changes. The park opened in 2024, so the routes are well-graded and clearly marked. Check TPWD for seasonal closures.

Best Seasons for Hiking Near Eastland

Fall (October through early December) and spring (March through May) are the sweet spots. Summer temps regularly push past 100 degrees, so if you do hike June through August, go early - out the door by 7 a.m. at the latest. Winters are mild enough for comfortable hiking most days, though the occasional ice storm can shut trails down for a day or two.

What to Bring

Pack at least a liter of water per person for any hike over a mile, even in cooler months. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are a must - the terrain around Eastland is rocky limestone in spots. Sunscreen and a hat go without saying in Texas. If you plan to hike at Possum Kingdom or Palo Pinto, bring your state park pass or budget $7 per person for day-use entry.

On-Property Trails

Before you head out on the road, the walking paths right here at Inez Spring follow the Leon River through shaded pecan and oak groves. It is a good warm-up route or a mellow afternoon option when you want to stay close to camp. The paths connect the RV sites, the pool area, and picnic grounds, so you can make a loop of it without ever leaving the property.
